2023 Vintage

  • The 2023 growing season in Oregon's Willamette Valley will be remembered as one of remarkable balance and generosity. Following a series of challenging vintages marked by wildfire, heat extremes, and spring frost events, 2023 offered a welcome return to a more familiar rhythm.

Winter brought adequate rainfall, replenishing soil moisture and providing healthy reserves for the growing season ahead. Spring arrived cool and somewhat delayed, with budbreak occurring approximately one to two weeks later than average across much of the valley. However, a period of sustained warmth in May accelerated vine development dramatically. The interval between budbreak and bloom was among the shortest on record, compressing the season and requiring growers to complete vineyard operations within an unusually narrow timeframe.

Flowering and fruit set proceeded under favorable conditions, resulting in healthy, balanced crops. The summer months were predominantly warm, dry, and remarkably free of disease pressure. Consistent sunshine encouraged excellent canopy growth and even fruit development, while cool nighttime temperatures helped preserve acidity and aromatic complexity.

A brief period of intense heat in August reduced yields in some sites through sunburn and dehydration, particularly in exposed vineyard blocks. Nevertheless, the dry conditions minimized the threat of rot and mildew, allowing growers considerable flexibility in determining optimal harvest dates.

Harvest commenced earlier than average and moved swiftly. The compressed nature of the vintage required careful attention and decisive picking, yet the weather remained cooperative throughout much of September and early October. Fruit entered wineries in exceptionally healthy condition, exhibiting outstanding flavor development and balanced chemistry.

The resulting wines capture both the generosity of a warm vintage and the refinement for which the Willamette Valley is renowned. Pinot Noir displays expressive aromatics of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and baking spice, supported by supple tannins and an inviting immediacy. Chardonnay combines vibrant citrus and orchard fruit character with freshness, precision, and textural depth.

The 2023 vintage is distinguished by its accessibility and charm. These are wines of purity and polish, possessing enough concentration and structure to reward cellaring while offering considerable pleasure in their youth. For many producers, 2023 represents one of the most complete and compelling vintages of recent years. A vintage that beautifully expresses both the resilience of Oregon's winegrowers and the unique character of the Willamette Valley.

“A dark, juice, fruit-forward Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity Hills site Zena Crown, on the western-facing slopes that stare right at the Van Duzer Corridor. Aromas of blue fruits and turned soils, and rich violet florals announce this Pinot Noir from the 2003 planted   vineyard, farmed by the Jackson Family. The palate offers juice fruit, red plums, candied raspberries and flourishes of saline minerality. "

“From one of Eola-Amity Hills’ most revered sites, the 2023 Olive Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, Zena Crown Vineyard, delivers a poised and quaffable bottle of Pinot. Fragrant notes of wild strawberry, Bing cherry, cedary herbs, and dried violet emerge first, layered with crushed basalt and a faint savory earthiness that speaks to the vineyard’s stony soils. The palate builds in depth, weaving together black cherry and red plum with lifted accents of blood-orange essence and a hint of cherry cola. Concentrated yet finely tuned, it carries its intensity through a persistent and polished finish."

“A rebrand for Olive Hamilton Russell with a gorgeous Chardonnay from Maple Grove Vineyard and a stunning new embossed label. Located in the South Salem Hills on a windy site not far from the Eola-Amity Hills, a region quickly becoming one of the country’s most notable Chardonnay locations. Aromas of lemon rind, wet slate, wisps of dried white flowers and salty ocean air. The palate is lively, with crisp citrus, gorgeous texture and complexity, lemon curd, green mangoes and a bright salted lemon wedge."

"The warm scent of a melting beeswax candle mingles with this wine’s aromas of Meyer lemon, yellow apple, and a wisp of talc. With a truly impressive level of acidity lighting the way, flavors like tart lemon zest, grilled pineapple, and wet slate zip across the palate in energetic fashion."

“The 2023 Olive Hamilton Russell Chardonnay, Maple Grove Vineyard, from the Willamette Valley is built around substance and shape, its full-bodied presence kept lively by moderate-plus acidity. Bosc pear and Golden Delicious apple lead the aromatic profile, followed by oyster shell salinity and a savory lift of coastal herbs that expand with air. On the palate, white peach joins the orchard fruit core, while a discreet umami note adds breadth and textural resonance without disturbing the wine’s poise. Broad, layered, and confidently composed, it closes with a sustained decadent finish."
